What Should I Expect From A Dental Check-up?

For most patients, a check-up is required at least every six months, although your dentist may ask that you visit us more often.

When you come to us for a new patient check-up you can expect:

  • A thorough chat about your medical and dental history
  • A complete check of your teeth, gums and oral tissues
  • An oral cancer check
  • A chat about any dental concerns, worries or desire for smile improvements you may have
  • X-rays and other diagnostics if needed

When you visit us as an existing patient, your check-up will be just as comprehensive as a new patient exam; only the focus will be on any general health or oral health changes that may have occurred since we last saw you. Our advice on your oral health treatment is always adapted to your current needs.

By attending a regular check-up with us, any oral health issues can be caught early, which gives the best possible prognosis for recovery. Any changes in your health or medication also enables us to fully support and adapt your care plan with us to suit your current oral health needs.

What Are Dental Fillings?

When a tooth is broken, or has a lot of decay, it needs repairing in order to save it. To do this we remove the decay from the tooth and fill the space in with a suitable filling material. The filling is then shaped and hardened to maintain the integrity of the tooth.

Can I Have A White Filling At Stonehouse Dental Care?

At our clinic we like to ensure our patients have as much choice as modern dentistry allows when it comes to their treatment options. When it comes to fillings, we can offer you a white composite filling instead of a silver filling. Some patients prefer this option because the tooth is still strengthened and restored, but without aesthetic compromise.

Instead, the composite is tooth coloured so it blends into the surrounding natural teeth.

What If I Need A Tooth Extracting?

Even with the best oral hygiene and care, dental disease and injury happens, and sometimes a tooth needs to be extracted. It is a last resort for us, and is not something we take lightly.

In the event you do need a tooth removed we will ensure the entire process is as comfortable as possible for you. We also have plenty of dental restoration treatments we can discuss so that you can maintain a full smile moving forward.

Can I Have Crowns At Stonehouse Dental Care?

A crown (or “cap”) is a tooth replacement that is cemented over the top of the remaining natural tooth above the gum line.

Patients most often require a crown when there is no longer enough tooth tissue left to hold a filling securely or to strengthen a tooth after root canal treatment, however sometimes they can also work with a bridge to fill in the gap left by a missing tooth.

Crowns can be made out of a variety of material such as gold, silver or porcelain. In all instances, the crown is applied with care and precision to ensure it restores function of your teeth.

When appearance is your primary goal, our team can offer natural-looking, well-fitting crowns which restore your smile and blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth.

Root Canal Treatment

When the internal parts of a tooth become infected, root canal treatment will likely be necessary. The root canals contain soft pulp and nerves within the body of the tooth and under normal circumstances present no problems when the tooth is healthy. However, if the hard outer layer of the tooth is compromised, for example by a crack, bacteria can enter and cause infection.

The dentist will use special tools to access the root canals and remove the infected material including the nerves. A special filling is used to fill the cleaned canals and often a dental crown will be used to renew the aesthetics of the tooth and to renew its strength.

Root canal treatment should not be feared and is performed using a powerful anaesthetic to ensure any pain is minimised.
